Meta resolves the Cambridge Analytica lawsuit for $725 million

Meta has agreed to pay $725 million to settle legal action stemming from a data breach linked to political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica.

The long-running case accused Facebook of granting third parties, including the British business, access to Facebook users' personal information.

According to lawyers, the proposed settlement is the largest in a US data privacy class action.

Meta, which did not admit wrongdoing, stated that it has "revamped" its privacy policies over the previous three years.

"So Meta probably won't be too unhappy with this deal, but it does stand as a warning to social media companies that mistakes can prove very costly indeed."

The case was brought on behalf of a huge proposed class of Facebook users whose personal data was released to third parties without their consent on the social network.

According to tech author James Ball, that Meta had to agree to a significant pay-out, but it was "not that much" money to the tech giant.
